Released back in 2005, the Marvel diorama of X-Men vs Sentinel No. 1 nowadays represents a childhood dream for many collectors! Over the years, in fact, this giant of resin has become one of the rarest pieces among all Marvel statues produced by Sideshow, and it always exhibits crazy quotations in its (very rare) appearances on market. The number #1 reveals the existence of other (two) dioramas dedicated to the group of mutants par excellence of the Marvel Universe, but none of them has ever even reached lightly the success and value of this first, spectacular statue. The piece was sculpted by Pablo Viggiano and has a considerable size of (43 x 33 cm), a height of approximately 48 cm and a weight of more than 10 Kg. The edition size of the regular version is of 1250 samples, while the exclusive, equipped with LEDs that light up the eyes of Cyclops and parts of the sentinel, counts 650 pieces. Unlike most of the old-schhol Marvel dioramas, more than a clash between the mutant group and their archenemy, the statue portrays the final image of a true massacre! Two of the most powerful and representative members of the X-Men, Cyclops and Colossus, stand out on the ruins of the android, with poses and expressions that clearly suggest the incredible fury of the the battle. Colossus shows the legs firmly planted on the muddy ground and dominates the scene by raising up to the sky the huge head of the sentinel in triumph; at his side, Cyclops stands in a more dynamic and cautious pose, with the torso slightly backwards and both legs bent, ready to open the visor with his left hand and to unleash his deadly optical beam in case of any need. The sculpt of the characters is nothing short of sensational. The imposing figure of Colossus is highlighted by a statuesque pose offering a great scenic effect. The hyperdefined pectorals and abdominals combine with the powerful muscles on legs, arms (one bent to support the head of the enemy and the other tense and with clenched fist in defiance) and back, where the coloring fades every detail with great skill and effectiveness. The typical horizontal bands that characterize the armor of organic metal of the Russian mutant are smooth and well defined, while the overall coloring looks great, with opaque, although intense, red and yellow tones in the central part of the costume. The expression of face is beautiful: a grimace of overwhelming fury which the enemy was evidently forced to deal with! Even the figure of Cyclops, although less impressive, is very well done and exhibits an attractive chromatic contrast between the dominant black of the suit and the gold color of the belt, the thin vertical lines on the sides of the trunk, the large bracelets at wrists and (in the case of the exclusive version) also the light that illuminates the visor at eyes. Nevertheless, in this diorama the feature that immediately catches the eyes are the devastated ruins of the sentinel. The mammoth head with eyes staring into space is very faithful to Comics and sculpted in an exemplary way: the crown of perfect ovals embossed on the forehead, the hyper-squared nose, the mouth with mechanical inside and the circular joint at the level of the left ear, stress the robotic nature of the subject to perfection. On the right side, the effects of the clash with the two mutants are pointed out by the perfect shades of colors and the notable dents; in the lower, some broken pipes and an irregular contour suggest the brutal violence with which his head was unplugged from the body. On the ground, a giant hand of metallic blue color stands out, separated from the body of the android and equipped with an amber-colored hemisphere which the sentinel probably used to emit deadly energy beams. The hand is open, as in surrender, and highlights the joining points on the surface and the metal junctions between the different phalanges. In some sense, this piece can be considered a true precursor of the many statues devoted to the members of the X-Men in the most recent years, and always showing the ruins of a Sentinel as a functional base or a simple decorative add-on! The class of this statue is indisputable: it is able to convey the sensation of a brutal clash and the feeling of strength and drama that characterizes many of the Marvel tables dedicated to the X-Men. A spectacular diorama, which undoubtedly deserves the prestige it has among collectors all over the world!
